How difficult is Toubkal?

In summer and autumn the route is a long, steep hike on rocky paths with no climbing. The difficulty comes from altitude and the length of the days: around 5–6 hours to the refuge and 6–8 hours on summit day including the descent. Anyone with regular hiking fitness can do it; walkers who rarely go above 2,000 m benefit from the 3-day version, which adds a night in a village to acclimatise.

Best time to climb

  • April to June: long days, green valleys, some snow remains near the summit in early spring.
  • July and August: hot in Marrakech but pleasant on the mountain; the busiest period.
  • September to November: stable weather, clear views, our favourite season.
  • December to March: a true winter ascent with snow and ice — only with winter equipment and experience.

Do I need a guide?

Yes. Local regulations require trekkers in the Toubkal area to be accompanied by an officially licensed guide. Beyond the rule, a local guide handles mules, refuge bookings, meals and the weather call on summit morning.

What to pack

  • Broken-in hiking boots and trekking poles
  • Warm layers: fleece, down jacket, hat and gloves (the summit is cold at dawn, even in summer)
  • Head torch for the early start
  • Sun protection: sunglasses, cream, cap
  • 1.5–2 L water capacity and snacks
  • Sleeping bag liner for the refuge

Altitude sickness

Mild headaches are common above 3,000 m. Walk slowly, drink often and tell your guide if symptoms get worse; descending is the most effective cure. The 3-day itinerary reduces the risk significantly.
